Cirkeln - S. Bergmark Elfgren & M. Strandberg

Youth literature has come a long way since the days when I read my way through the youth section of our local library. Today there are plenty of actionpacked books, backed up by underlying food for thought and a smart heroine. Take Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials', Scott Westerfeld's 'Uglies', Suzanne Collins's 'The Hunger Games' as mere examples.

Despite this, despite the media hype surrounding this book in Sweden and despite the fact that Strandberg, judging from his weekly columns in one of Sweden's major newspapers, seems to be a very decent and sensible young man, 'Cirkeln' is not one of the intelligent books mentioned above. The characters are stereotyped, the action never once makes my pulse race and globally, the shallowness of it all reminds me of Disney's 'Witch' comics.

Sorry, this just doesn't work for me.
